# Understanding policy

> Set repository expectations for question count, passing standards, and merge enforcement.

An understanding policy defines how a repository uses understanding checks.
Workspace owners configure it in the repository's settings.

## Maximum question count

The maximum limits the number of questions in an understanding check. A check
may contain fewer questions when the change supports fewer useful prompts.
Choose a limit that keeps the review focused on meaningful behavior.

## Passing standards

When passing standards are enabled, the repository's configured percentage
determines whether an explanation meets its policy. When they are disabled,
results show qualitative understanding labels instead of points or percentages.

## Repository check behavior

Choose whether an unmet policy appears as a failed provider check. This lets
your team use results as coaching signals or incorporate them into its merge
workflow.

GitHub controls merge enforcement. To require the Second Flow check before
merging, configure the applicable GitHub repository rule or branch protection
setting. Changing the Second Flow policy alone does not configure GitHub's
merge rules.

## Revision scope

A result applies to the change-request head revision it was created for. Review
the current repository check after new commits, and use the current
understanding-check link.
